BIcheno Surf Club + Boathouse

The Architect was approached to assist the Bicheno Nippers (Surf Life Saving Juniors) in their quest for a boathouse when the ‘next’ prefab metal shed went over budget by more than 100%.

The Architect offered pro-bono architectural services for this important little public facility, as a community service. Bicheno is a semi-remote small regional community and new opportunities for young people are a rarity. Lifesaving and learning to swimming are essential services for all communities large or small.

The site for the new clubhouse was on the iconic shoreline of Waubs Bay, Bicheno. The site included an existing neglected 1970’s toilet block with pipes that leached outfall directly onto the beach.

With this limited budget the Bicheno Nippers desired a new Surf Life Saving Club facilities for storage of an inflatable boat, long boards, wetsuits and surf skis, and if the budget allowed upgrades to the existing amenities in particular to discontinue the leaching of waste onto the beach. The clubhouse was also for the Architect an opportunity to create a public gesture that represents and engages the Bicheno community, a dedicated small social network that takes care and pride in the environment and its children.
